How do you install a wall decal pattern? - Made of Sundays

How do you install a wall decal pattern?

Decorative decals are a great and fast way to cheer up any surface, they come in all shapes and colours and getting them on the wall is easier than you think.

We put together this quick guide to show how to space wall patterns, you just need to decide if you want to go for a geometric look or a more organic random one. We are great fans of randomness, but evenly spaced patterns give you that wallpaper feel that works particularly great on bigger surfaces.

Geometric patterns

If you want to go for an evenly spaced wall pattern you need to plan ahead a bit.

  1. Measure the surface well.
  2. Calculate the spacing between each decal according to the size of the surface and the amount of decals you have.
  3. Use a guide to mark out the location of the decals. This guide can be something as simple as a square of paper that is cut to measure. By moving the paper and placing the decals here the corners of the paper touch is an easy way to get even spacing. If you want to get an offset spacing like in the video, just place the upper border of your paper in the middle of the decals of the row above.

Another way to get geometric patterns is to use a ruler and a piece of chalk (or washi tape). With the chalk you plot out the locations of the decals on the wall before hand, as this allows you to make corrections before actually applying the decals. When you get the pattern right, you just apply the individual decals on top of the dots you made.

Here you have a couple of examples of perfect evenly spaced patterns made by our lovely clients:

Random patterns

Applying random patterns is more up to your own visual eye. We recommend that you peel off a small piece of the backing paper and use the transfer tape to attach the decals to the wall. This way you can reposition the decals before you actually attach them for a perfect pattern. A great way to do a patterned dot wall is is to go for a tight spacing up top and then loosen it up as you go down to achieve a cascading waterfall look.

Patterns that spread out from a specific point

A spread of stickers can be applied pretty much anywhere you can imagine. A popular one is polka dot stickers that spread out from a corner, or a waterfall that starts from under a shelf or a spot in the roof and then gets more and more spaced out as they fall downwards. Applying decorative stickers this way is sure to capture the attention and redirect it to a single focal point. Great choices for these kind of sticker decorations are polka dots, stars, rain drops and small sprinkles.
